I remember thinking that bugs life was the best thing ever when it came out. Watching it again last night, I couldn't help but be distracted by the bad deformation in the corners of the characters mouths. This wasn't a technical limitation, it was just bad edge loops or the lack of them as I noted on the clay sculptures with vertex markings for their point scanner at the Pixar exhibition.

I never understood why they resisted this technique for so long, the later models of the incredible used an edge loop layout and they deform quite well.

Still, Bugs life was an amazing achievement in light and rendering for its time and of course the animation was just lovely.
